Service overview

What's involved in carpenter.

Plain-English breakdown, so you know exactly what you're paying for and why it matters before we set foot on site.

What it is

First and second-fix carpentry plus bespoke joinery, fitted wardrobes, alcove units, media walls, window seats, bookcases, kitchen carcasses and worktops, internal doors and architraves, staircases and balustrades, decking and pergolas. Built off-site in our workshop where the job suits it, fitted on-site where scribing to old walls matters more than factory-finish.

Who it's for

Homeowners who want fitted storage that looks built-in rather than bought-in, anyone restoring period detail in a Victorian or Edwardian property, landlords needing solid, hard-wearing doors and skirtings, and project clients who want the joinery package taken out of a builder's quote and done properly.

When you need it

Tired flat-pack wardrobes giving up; a new build or extension needing first-fix joists, studs and noggins; period doors warped or split; alcoves crying out for storage; staircases creaking, sagging or out of regulation; or a kitchen install needing carcasses scribed to a wonky wall.

Why it matters

Cheap joinery looks fine for a year, then the doors drop, the worktop joints open up and the paintwork cracks at every junction. Properly cut, properly fixed timber stays straight, takes the knocks of family life, and lifts the perceived value of every room it sits in.

The cost of doing nothing

What goes wrong when this is ignored.

Carpentry is the trade that shows. Every misaligned skirting, every gap at a mitre, every door that doesn't close cleanly tells visitors exactly how the house was looked after.

Risks of waiting

  • Wardrobes screwed to plasterboard without finding studs will sag and pull out within 18 months, sometimes ripping the wall with them.
  • Internal doors hung without easing, planing and adjusting will bind in summer, rattle in winter, and damage frames over time.
  • Staircases out of Part K compliance (rise, going, handrail height) cause trips, fail building control, and can stop a sale.
  • Untreated external timber (decking, pergolas, fascias) rots in 3–5 winters in Kent's wet climate, dragging fixings out with it.

Common mistakes

  • Buying flat-pack units to fit alcoves, they're always 30–60mm out, leaving ugly fillets that ruin the finish.
  • Using softwood architrave on a humid bathroom and then wondering why it splits at every mitre.
  • Skipping packers and scribes, every cabinet eventually sits proud of the wall it should be flush with.
  • Letting an unqualified handyman cut into joists for downlights or pipework, weakening the floor.

Our process

How the job actually runs.

Same system every time. No improvising on your floor.

  1. 01

    Design visit

We measure the room properly (laser plus tape), discuss materials, finishes and ironmongery, and sketch options on the spot where it's straightforward.

  2. 02

    Fixed quote & drawings

Within 3–5 working days you get a written quote and, for bespoke work, a simple drawing pack so you can sign off the design before timber is ordered.

  3. 03

    Workshop build (where suited)

Carcasses, doors and face frames are cut, jointed and primed in our workshop, controlled conditions mean tighter joints and a better finish.

  4. 04

    On-site install

Floors protected, dust extraction running, all scribes cut on-site so cabinets sit flush to your actual walls, not the plumb ideal.

  5. 05

    Finish & snag

Final easing of doors, adjusting of soft-close hinges, caulking of every junction, full clean-down and a walk-round with you before sign-off.

Soft-close everything

Blum or Hettich hinges and runners as standard on fitted units, quiet, smooth, lifetime-rated.

Decorator-ready finish

Caulked, sanded and primed so your decorator (or ours) lays down a flawless top coat.

Properly fixed

Fitted wardrobes, alcove units and media walls

Alcove cabinetry is the highest-ROI joinery upgrade most Tunbridge Wells homeowners make, full-height storage where there was none, painted to match the wall colour so the room feels larger, not busier. We build carcasses from 18mm furniture-grade MDF, face frames in tulipwood (paint-grade) or oak (stain-grade), with shaker or slab doors as specified. Media walls integrate cable management, recessed TV mounts, and floating shelves with concealed brackets, no trailing wires, no exposed fixings.

Internal doors, frames and architraves

Hanging doors is the trade most often rushed. We chisel hinge rebates by hand on hardwood doors, ease and plane stiles and rails so the door swings without binding, fit ironmongery (mortice locks, latches, handles) to manufacturer spec, and adjust strike plates so the door catches firmly on first close. Architraves and skirtings are mitred tight, glued and pinned, not just relying on caulk to hide a sloppy cut.

Staircases, balustrades and Part K compliance

We install and repair traditional cut-string and closed-string staircases, oak and glass balustrade systems, and modern open-tread designs. All new staircases meet Part K of the Building Regulations: maximum 220mm rise, minimum 220mm going, handrail between 900–1000mm above pitch line, balusters spaced so a 100mm sphere can't pass through. Existing staircases are re-glued, re-wedged and re-blocked from underneath to silence creaks for good.

Kitchen carcasses, worktops and second-fix

Whether you're fitting a pre-bought kitchen (Howdens, DIY Kitchens, Wickes) or a fully bespoke design, the install is what makes or breaks it. We level every carcass to within 1mm, scribe end panels to walls and floors, machine-mason solid worktops with proper joints (butt-and-scribe, biscuit-jointed, sealed with colour-matched adhesive), and fit cornices, pelmets and plinths to a paint-grade standard.

External joinery, decking, fascias, pergolas

Kent weather is brutal on external timber. We use pressure-treated softwood for substructure, hardwood (iroko, oak) or composite for visible decking, and stainless or coated fixings throughout, no rust streaks. Fascias and soffits are cut from cellular PVC or pre-primed timber, fixed to a continuous batten with stainless ring-shanks, and capped properly at corners so water doesn't track behind them.
